Cyprus holds 2026 parliamentary elections
On May 24, 2026, the Republic of Cyprus held parliamentary elections to fill 56 seats in the House of Representatives. A record number of 752 candidates participated, including 743 running under party tickets and 9 independents. Approximately 569,000 registered voters were eligible to cast ballots at over 1,200 polling stations across Cyprus and at 13 centers abroad, including in Athens, Thessaloniki, London, and Brussels. Voting began at 7:00 a.m. and was scheduled to conclude at 6:00 p.m., with a mandatory one-hour break at noon. Officials noted that presiding officers have the authority to extend voting until midnight if there are remaining voters. The election process also includes the selection of a representative for the Maronite religious group, while the Armenian and Latin representatives were elected unopposed. Initial results were expected shortly after polls closed, with the full distribution of seats anticipated by late evening and names of the elected MPs confirmed in the early hours of Monday.
