Fatal traffic accidents and severe weather incidents in Cyprus
On May 23, 2026, two separate fatal traffic accidents occurred in Cyprus. A 55-year-old Hungarian woman, Helga Tarcsai, died following a head-on collision on the Meneou-Pervolia road; the 26-year-old driver of the other vehicle was arrested following preliminary reports of an illegal overtaking maneuver. Separately, a 75-year-old Scottish woman, Margery Balfour, died after being struck by a vehicle while walking in a parking lot in Paphos, leading to the arrest of a 56-year-old driver. In addition to the casualties, severe weather conditions caused widespread disruption across Nicosia on May 23. Heavy rainfall resulted in localized flooding, the collapse of a road section in Strovolos, and a fallen tree on the Nicosia-Kokkinotrimithia motorway. Emergency services performed rescues, including one of an elderly person from a flooded home. Traffic remained affected in several areas, including the Agiou Ioanni-Kato Monis road, while authorities advised drivers to exercise caution due to limited visibility and water accumulation.
