Elderly and displaced voters participate in Cyprus elections
Elderly voters, including displaced persons and those from occupied areas, participated in the recent parliamentary elections in Cyprus. Citizens traveled from areas such as Kormakitis and Karpasia to designated polling stations in Nicosia, Acheritou, and Larnaca, often assisted by family members or organized transport. Notable voters included 93-year-old Georgia Piripitsi, who voted at the Kokkina Primary School, and Suzana Savva, a resident of Kormakitis. A special polling station was established at Kykkos A' Lyceum for the Maronite community to vote for their representative. Voters expressed that participating in elections is a long-standing personal duty despite their advanced age and physical challenges. While some voters traveled privately, others used organized bus services to reach the polling stations in the free areas. The primary motivations cited by participants included the hope for regional change and the expression of their civic rights.
