Cyprus holds 2026 parliamentary elections with historic shifts
The 2026 Cypriot parliamentary elections concluded on May 24, resulting in a six-party legislature. DISY secured 27.2% of the vote, maintaining its 17 seats, while AKEL reached 23.9% with 15 seats. ELAM saw a significant surge, doubling its presence to 8 seats with 10.9% of the vote. DIKO received 10% and 8 seats, while newcomers ALMA and Direct Democracy Cyprus entered parliament for the first time with 4 seats each. Notably, the historical EDEK party and the Ecologists failed to cross the 3.6% threshold, marking their exit from the House after decades of presence. In the Paphos district, Nicoletta Konstantinou of DISY became the first woman elected to represent the region in parliamentary history. Additionally, Petros Nakouzi was elected as the representative for the Maronite religious group with 51.39% of the vote. President Nikos Christodoulides officially acknowledged the electoral outcome and the smooth conduct of the process.
