UN envoy prepares for five-party conference on the Cyprus issue
United Nations personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin is conducting a new round of meetings with leaders on the island to prepare for a planned '5+1' conference. The conference, involving the guarantor powers, is expected to take place in July or August, though an exact date remains unconfirmed. While the Greek Cypriot side hopes this meeting will lead to the resumption of formal negotiations, Holguin expressed optimism but declined to commit to a specific outcome, stating that it depends on the discussions held at the event. Holguin is scheduled to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara on Monday and Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis in Athens on Tuesday. Additionally, the Greek Cypriot side has noted that the Turkish side appears to be focusing more on Confidence Building Measures rather than the core political process. Meanwhile, President Nikos Christodoulides addressed local issues in Pano Polemidia, promising to resolve concerns regarding electrical infrastructure in the community. The overall diplomatic effort aims to break years of stagnation in the Cyprus settlement process.
