OELMEK holds elections for new leadership
On Tuesday, June 9, members of the OELMEK trade union for secondary education teachers are voting to elect 180 general representatives. This electoral process is held every three years and will determine the power distribution among five movements: Allagi, Proodeftiki, DIKI, Nea Kinisi, and the newly formed AFEK. The movement Nea Pnoi, which participated in previous years, is absent from this year's ballot. Approximately 6,800 teachers are eligible to vote across six polling stations nationwide, including locations in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta, and Solea. Once the 180 representatives are chosen, they will form a 21-member Central Administrative Council. This council will subsequently be responsible for electing the seven-member Secretariat of the organization. The outcome of these elections is considered significant due to pending educational issues, such as labor conditions, school violence, and teacher evaluation. Future negotiations with the Ministry of Education over the next three years will be shaped by the resulting leadership structure.
