Tufan Erhurman discusses conditions for potential 5+1 Cyprus summit
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman recently met with Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, describing the discussion as sincere and productive. Erhurman emphasized that any potential 5+1 summit requires thorough preparation to achieve substantive results. He proposed a three-stage process for the Turkish Cypriot side: making progress on Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) in Nicosia, establishing clear ground rules through a quadripartite methodology, and eventually moving to comprehensive negotiations. Regarding the timeline, Erhurman suggested that if preparatory work is successful, a summit could take place between late June and mid-July. If preparations are incomplete by August, the meeting could be postponed until September. He further noted that the focus of these efforts extends beyond CBMs to the core issues of the Cyprus problem.
