President Christodoulides anticipates expanded conference on Cyprus issue

President Nikos Christodoulides stated on Tuesday that ongoing diplomatic efforts are aimed at organizing an expanded conference to announce the resumption of formal negotiations regarding the Cyprus issue. Speaking in Polemidia during a cornerstone-laying ceremony for the 'Adonis III' housing complex, the President declined to comment on statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. While some reports suggest Erhurman prioritizes confidence-building measures over the President's cautious optimism, Christodoulides emphasized that international momentum is building. He noted that the UN Secretary-General, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy, and the European Union are working toward this goal. The President highlighted that this initiative gained traction following meetings between the UN Secretary-General and the Turkish President in March, as well as his own subsequent meetings in Brussels. Christodoulides rejected past claims that his focus on this initiative was merely related to his previous election campaign, asserting that current developments confirm its validity.
