Health authorities raise concerns over food delivery hygiene in Cyprus

The Health Services of the Ministry of Health in Cyprus have reported a significant rise in consumer complaints regarding hygiene standards during food delivery by motorcycle and moped drivers. Digital platforms such as Foody and Wolt have seen rapid growth in the country over the past 6-7 years, becoming primary service providers for local restaurants and retailers. Authorities have addressed the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), calling for stricter oversight and compliance. A core issue identified is the employment status of drivers, who generally operate as self-employed partners rather than direct employees. Furthermore, the authorities noted that many drivers are foreign nationals without permanent residency, creating legal challenges in their registration and monitoring as food business operators. Additional reports from citizens suggest that animals have occasionally been found inside delivery containers. The Ministry emphasizes that maintaining hygiene during transportation is a collective responsibility of businesses, platforms, and workers.
