Cabinet approves 2026 support grants for mountainous and remote area residents
The Council of Ministers of Cyprus has approved the provision of financial support grants for the year 2026 for residents of mountainous and remote regions. Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou stated that the program aims to retain the existing population and attract new residents to these areas. Eligibility for the mountain allowance is granted to residents of communities at an altitude of at least 600 meters. For remote areas, the grants apply to non-retired employees living in communities at least 40 kilometers from an urban center, or between 30 and 39 kilometers away at an altitude of at least 700 meters. This measure is part of the government's broader strategy for rural revitalization. In 2025, the government distributed a total of 8.95 million euros to 14,576 households, representing 31,975 individuals. These grants are provided on an annual basis to support local economic activity and improve living conditions in rural villages.
