Nasa announces Artemis III mission crew and operational plan
NASA has officially announced the four astronauts assigned to the upcoming Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2027. The crew includes Americans Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, and Andre Douglas, along with Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano. This mission aims to test critical systems in Earth's orbit, serving as a preparatory step for the planned 2028 crewed landing on the Moon's South Pole. The operation will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with the crew expected to return to Earth via a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean after a duration of approximately two weeks. NASA officials, including agency head Jared Isaacman and Blue Origin representative John Koulouris, emphasized that the mission is vital for gathering data to ensure safety for future lunar landings. The Artemis III mission is compared to the Apollo 9 test flight conducted in 1969. SpaceX, which is collaborating on the program along with Blue Origin, confirmed its support for the crew. The mission intends to lay the technical foundation for the subsequent Artemis IV expedition.
