Cyprus forestry department announces strict fire safety regulations

The Cyprus Department of Forests has issued a reminder regarding the strict prohibition of lighting fires within state forests and a two-kilometer buffer zone. This measure is in effect to mitigate the high risk of wildfires as the summer season approaches. For unauthorized fire lighting, the department imposes extrajudicial fines: 2,500 euros between May and October, 1,000 euros in March, April, and November, and 500 euros from December to February. If the case proceeds to court, offenders may face up to five years imprisonment or fines of up to 25,000 euros. Furthermore, causing a fire through negligence resulting in damage to forests or private property carries much harsher penalties, including up to 12 years in prison or fines of up to 100,000 euros. Exceptions are made only for cooking in designated, organized picnic and camping areas. The regulations emphasize that these rules apply to all individuals to protect human life, the environment, and property.
