Multiple pedestrians injured in Modena vehicle and stabbing attack

On May 17, 2026, 31-year-old Salim El Koudri allegedly drove a vehicle at high speed along Via Emilia in Modena, Italy, striking multiple pedestrians. After crashing, the suspect reportedly stabbed a bystander who attempted to prevent his escape. A total of eight people were injured in the incident, with two 55-year-old victims currently in serious condition in intensive care. Two other women, from Germany and Poland, sustained multiple injuries and underwent surgery. Four individuals, including two Egyptian residents of Italy, were credited by Mayor Massimo Mezzetti for immobilizing the attacker. Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the hospital to meet with the victims and thank the medical staff for their efforts. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the attack, while the mayor urged the public to avoid generalizations regarding the suspects and those who intervened.
