Nomination process for the new Metropolitan of Paphos

The process of nominating candidates for the Metropolitan Throne of Paphos is currently underway, serving as a significant test for the Church of Cyprus's new constitutional charter. Archimandrite Ioannis, Abbot of the Saint Barnabas Monastery, has formally submitted his candidacy, citing his previous service in Paphos from 1985 to 2007. Other reported candidates include Archimandrite Grigorios Ioannidis, Archimandrite Sophronios of the Trooditissa Monastery, and Bishop Porphyrios of Neapolis. Bishops Christoforos of Karpasia and Grigorios of Mesaoria have reportedly withdrawn their candidacies. The Holy Synod is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, to approve the final list of candidates and potentially elect a new Metropolitan.
