Cypriot MEP questions the display of the LGBTQ+ flag at the European Commission

Cypriot MEP Geadis Geadi, representing the ECR group, has sent a formal letter to the European Commission regarding the decision to raise the LGBTQ+ flag outside its building during Pride Week. Geadi criticized the move as a transformation of European institutions into platforms for promoting specific political and activist symbols. He questioned whether the Commission institutionally equates the LGBTQ+ flag with the official flags of sovereign states or the European Union itself. The MEP demanded clarification on whether there was democratic legitimacy or public approval for displaying such symbols. Additionally, he inquired whether the Commission showed similar public support or symbolic sensitivity during the International Day of Families. Geadi also responded to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's post on the social media platform X, where she described Pride Week as a celebration of love and identity. He argued that these actions represent an abandonment of institutional neutrality and a direct alignment of EU bodies with specific ideological agendas.
