Cyprus tourism faces sharp decline in April 2026 due to regional instability

The Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) reported a 27.6% year-on-year drop in tourist arrivals for April 2026, totaling 303,031 visitors compared to 418,730 in April 2025. This downturn extends a trend from March, resulting in a 17.9% decline for the first four months of the year. Industry officials, including ACTTA president Charis Papacharalambous and Cyprus Hotels Association director Christos Angelides, attribute the decline primarily to uncertainty stemming from the ongoing war in the Middle East. While the United Kingdom remained the primary market with 118,742 arrivals, Israel saw the steepest annual drop at 74.8%. Hotel occupancy has reportedly fallen to between 40% and 60%, a significant decrease from the typical 80-85%. Stakeholders are now launching aggressive promotional strategies, including influencer partnerships and joint campaigns with airlines, to restore confidence and mitigate full-year losses. Meanwhile, travel by Cyprus residents abroad remained stable, showing only a slight 0.3% decrease in April 2026.
