European commission proposes 144 million euro aid package for climate disaster relief

The European Commission has proposed a 144 million euro aid package from the European Union Solidarity Fund to assist Cyprus, Spain, and Romania in recovering from 2025 climate-related disasters. Cyprus is set to receive 9.2 million euros following two wildfires in July 2025 that struck Limassol and Paphos, resulting in two deaths and the destruction of nearly 900 homes. Cyprus has already received a 2.3 million euro advance payment to support infrastructure restoration. Spain is designated to receive 120.4 million euros to address damages from drought, heatwaves, and major wildfires, including a deadly August 8 blaze that killed eight people. This amount includes a 30 million euro advance already disbursed for emergency services and infrastructure repairs. Romania is allocated 14.3 million euros for flood recovery efforts in its central, southern Muntenia, and north-east regions occurring in May and June 2025. The funding for all three nations aims to restore essential services, including water, energy, telecommunications, and transport networks.
