Cyprus tourism faces challenges and lower bookings in early 2024
The Cypriot tourism sector, represented by PASYXE and ACTA, reports a challenging start to the 2024 season. Officials Christos Angelides and Charis Papacharalambous noted that March and April were essentially lost due to high cancellation rates and geopolitical uncertainty stemming from the Middle East. While there is a slight improvement in booking flows, they remain insufficient to cover earlier losses, with May performance trailing behind previous years. ACTA expects a 10% to 15% decrease in total tourist arrivals for the year, with a projected decline of 5% to 7% by the autumn months. Factors contributing to this downturn include increased fuel costs, reduced flight availability, and lingering travel warnings from the UK, which impact insurance and traveler confidence. Industry leaders are advocating for aggressive marketing strategies and collaboration with travel agents and influencers to restore the island's image as a safe destination. Meanwhile, tourism stakeholders are closely monitoring the impact of ongoing travel advisories and regional instability on the remainder of the season.
