Celebration of European Natura 2000 Day in Cyprus

On May 16 and 17, 2026, the Department of Environment and Terra Cypria organized a two-day event to mark European Natura 2000 Day. The event was part of the 'Pandoteira' project, which aims to improve the management and sustainability of the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus. On May 16, activities were held at the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research in Kritou Terra. On May 17, the celebration moved to the Smigies picnic area in the Akamas region. The second day featured a bird ringing demonstration and an educational hike along the Smigies trail. Participants were informed about the ecological importance of local flora and fauna within the Natura 2000 protected network. The Natura 2000 network is highlighted for its role in climate change mitigation, natural disaster protection, and support for local economies. The project emphasizes the network's function in maintaining biodiversity and creating environmental awareness.
