Nicosia hosts high-level conference on preventing online violence against girls

A two-day high-level conference focused on the prevention and combat of online violence against girls is being held in Nicosia under the Cyprus Presidency of the EU. Minister of Justice Costas Fytiris, represented by General Director George Panteli, emphasized the need for political will and coordinated action to protect human rights and gender equality. The event gathers EU and UN officials, experts, and academics to address the social phenomenon of online abuse. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Klea Papaellina is also participating, highlighting the protection of children as a key priority of the Cyprus Presidency. She referenced the Council conclusions on 'Investing in Children' adopted in March 2026. Papaellina advocated for a multidisciplinary approach, specifically endorsing the 'House of the Child' model as a best practice for child-centered support. The discussions focus on enhancing reporting mechanisms and fostering cooperation among relevant bodies to tackle emerging digital risks.
