Lithuanian authorities report drone incidents amid regional security alert

Lithuanian authorities recently issued an emergency alert and temporarily suspended operations at Vilnius Airport following reports of a suspected drone entering the country's airspace from Belarus. Residents in Vilnius were advised via mobile alerts to seek shelter, while parliamentary operations were also paused due to the potential security threat. Although the drone's exact origin remained initially unconfirmed, defense officials monitored its trajectory toward Lentvaris before it changed course. In a separate incident, authorities identified a crashed drone containing explosives in the village of Samane, located 55 kilometers from the Belarusian border. While Ukrainian origins for these drones have been suspected in several instances, Kyiv has not provided official comments. Baltic states have reported a series of similar airspace violations by errant drones since the onset of the conflict in 2022. NATO fighter aircraft have been scrambled on multiple occasions to monitor and intercept these unidentified objects across the Baltic region.
