Israeli forces intercept Global Sumud flotilla bound for Gaza
The Israeli Navy intercepted the Global Sumud flotilla, a mission of activists attempting to reach the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid and challenge Israel's naval blockade. Video footage shows Israeli commandos boarding one of the vessels after the participants were warned to change course. The Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) issued a statement clarifying that the flotilla never entered the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus. The authorities emphasized that all related activities occurred in international waters, approximately 90 nautical miles from the coast of Cyprus. The JRCC further noted that no distress signal requiring the activation of the Nearchos national search and rescue plan was received from the flotilla. Cyprus officials reiterated their commitment to international law and the Law of the Sea. The incident remains under observation, with Cyprus authorities prepared to respond only if a legitimate maritime accident occurs.
