Dangerous building evacuations and structural collapses reported in Cyprus
Authorities in Cyprus are addressing multiple cases of unsafe buildings in Larnaca and Paphos. In Larnaca, the roof of an abandoned house on Stavrodromiou Street in the Sotiras district collapsed, prompting investigations by police and fire services, though no injuries were reported. Simultaneously, the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (EOA) has issued evacuation orders for occupied apartment blocks, including the 24-unit Madona Court in Faneromeni and a building in Chrysopolitissa, due to structural concerns. Residents of these buildings are being offered temporary hotel accommodation through government and municipal support programs. In Paphos, a dispute has emerged regarding a building at the intersection of Nikolaou Ellina and Thermopylon streets; while the EOA issued an evacuation order on May 6, police indicated that a court order might be necessary for enforcement, a position disputed by EOA legal advisors. EOA officials emphasize that these actions are necessary to protect public safety and have warned property owners of legal consequences for ongoing neglect. Assessments are currently underway for at least 22 additional buildings in Larnaca that may require similar intervention.
