Nicosia police investigate phishing scam involving tax department impersonation

On May 18, Nicosia police received a report regarding a phishing scam where an individual was defrauded after receiving a fraudulent email. The email appeared to be from the Tax Department and requested the recipient's online banking access credentials. The victim complied and disclosed their banking details. Subsequently, a total of 2,517 euros was withdrawn from their bank account without authorization. The Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department is currently handling the case. Police have issued a public warning urging citizens never to share personal or financial information through email or unverified websites. Authorities emphasize that no state agency will ever ask for banking passwords through digital messages. The public is advised to delete such suspicious emails immediately and verify the authenticity of any official communication through official contact channels.
