US jury rules against Elon Musk in lawsuit against OpenAI

On Monday, a federal jury in Oakland, California, ruled in favor of OpenAI in a lawsuit brought by Elon Musk. The jury unanimously found that Musk filed his claims too late, concluding that the statute of limitations had already expired. In his 2024 lawsuit, Musk alleged that OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman, and President Greg Brockman manipulated him into investing $38 million before shifting from a non-profit mission to a for-profit model backed by Microsoft. Musk characterized the company's evolution as 'stealing a charity,' while OpenAI argued that Musk was motivated by financial interests and failed to act in a timely manner. The trial featured testimony from key figures including Musk, Altman, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers noted that there was substantial evidence supporting the jury's verdict and suggested that Musk would face significant challenges in a potential appeal. OpenAI and Musk co-founded the organization in 2015, with Musk departing the board in 2018.
