Cyprus evaluates AI-enhanced traffic camera expansion and reports statistics
The Cypriot Ministry of Transport is considering the integration of artificial intelligence into existing road surveillance cameras to monitor traffic violations, such as mobile phone use and seatbelt non-compliance. Senior Engineer Achilleas Pilias reported that there were 55,000 traffic violations recorded by stationary cameras through the end of 2025, noting a decrease compared to 2024. Analysis shows that while violations were initially high after installation, driver compliance improved over time. Currently, there are 90 stationary cameras operating nationwide. The Ministry is reviewing requests from local municipalities for new installations, though officials indicated they are not currently adding to the total count but are instead considering relocating existing devices. Furthermore, the authorities highlighted a concerning rise in fatal traffic accidents, primarily attributed to driver negligence and inattention. Potential adjustments to camera locations are being evaluated to balance traffic management with public safety requirements.
