Cyprus approves development plan for Cronus gas field
On May 19, 2026, the Cypriot Council of Ministers approved the development and production plan for the Cronus gas field located in Block 6 of the Exclusive Economic Zone. The field is operated by a consortium led by Eni and TotalEnergies, with estimated reserves of approximately 2.5 trillion cubic feet. The government also finalized key terms for a gas sales agreement with Egypt to facilitate exports. The current roadmap targets the first deliveries of natural gas to Europe via Egypt by 2028, utilizing existing infrastructure at the Damietta liquefaction terminal. Additionally, Egypt, ExxonMobil, and Qatar Energy signed a memorandum to enhance regional energy cooperation and infrastructure integration. While officials characterize this as a historic milestone, some observers point to the delays experienced with the Aphrodite field as a reminder of potential operational uncertainties. The consortium must still reach a Final Investment Decision to proceed with actual construction and production. Minister of Energy Michalis Damianou stated that these developments aim to position the Eastern Mediterranean as a key energy hub for the European Union.
