Supreme court upholds arrest warrants for taxi arson case

On Monday, the Supreme Court of Cyprus rejected three separate certiorari applications filed by suspects seeking to cancel arrest warrants issued in June 2025. The case concerns the arson of a retired taxi driver's vehicle on April 30, 2025. Investigations by the Nicosia District Court involve evidence provided by two high-reliability police informants who linked the suspects to the crime. One informant claimed to have overheard the suspects mocking the arson and mentioning that the "job was done" and attributed it to a "short circuit." A second informant identified the alleged perpetrator and described a vehicle owned by a company linked to one of the suspects. The suspects argued that the warrants lacked proportionality, necessity, and that police withheld essential facts from the lower court. Specifically, they claimed the investigator's affidavit failed to prove a risk of witness tampering or destruction of evidence. The Supreme Court dismissed these arguments, upholding the validity of the original arrest warrants.
