Cabinet approves two preschool education subsidy schemes

The Cyprus Cabinet has approved two new schemes to support preschool education and families for the 2026-2027 school year. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Klea Hadjistefanou-Papaellina stated that the first scheme provides subsidies for tuition and meals for children up to four years old, co-financed by the European Union under the THALEIA 2021-2027 cohesion policy program. This scheme covers up to 80% of costs for families eligible for child benefits, with additional support for children under two. The second scheme covers tuition for children aged four until they reach the age of mandatory free preschool education and is funded through the Recovery and Resilience Plan. According to the Ministry, the initiative aims to facilitate the balance between family and professional life, reduce poverty risks, and promote social justice. Official reports indicate that Cyprus has already exceeded 2030 EU targets regarding preschool participation rates for children under three.
