EAC announces crackdown on illegal renewable energy installations

Starting June 1, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) and its Distribution System Operator will launch a nationwide campaign to identify illegal renewable energy installations and unauthorized capacity increases. These systems, which lack proper inspection and approval, are cited for endangering public safety, increasing risks of fire or electrocution, and undermining the reliability of the national power grid. The operator noted that such illegal modifications also lead to more frequent power cuts for compliant photovoltaic system owners and cause forecasting errors. Detected violations will result in the immediate disconnection of the systems and the revocation of their suitability certificates. Offenders will be charged for investigation costs and their cases will be reported to the police. Furthermore, the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) and the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services will be notified to consider additional penalties or fines. The operator urges consumers to remove unauthorized equipment immediately or apply for formal legalization.
