Conflict over road improvement project in Akamas peninsula

A dispute has emerged in Cyprus over infrastructure upgrades on the Baths of Aphrodite-Fontana Amorosa road. The Terra Cypria environmental organization and Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou have called for the immediate cancellation of the project, citing concerns over environmental degradation and legal discrepancies. Opponents argue the new design violates 2021 ecological terms by increasing road width from 4 meters to 5 meters. The Commissioner also alleged a conflict of interest involving the forestry department, which acted as both project promoter and evaluator. Conversely, the Akamas municipality defends the works as essential for public safety, noting the route is linked to three fatal accidents and numerous injuries. The municipality argues that the road is critical for fire protection and emergency services, rejecting the idea that human safety and ecological preservation are mutually exclusive. The debate continues as authorities balance developmental needs with the protection of the sensitive coastal ecosystem.
