Cyprus and UK defense ministers hold bilateral talks in London

Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas met with his UK counterpart, John Healey, in London on Tuesday to discuss regional security and bilateral defense cooperation. The ministers addressed the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, emphasizing the need for political solutions. A primary topic of the meeting was the security of civilians residing near British military bases in Cyprus during periods of regional instability. The UK reported that it has significantly reinforced its Sovereign Base Areas at Akrotiri and Dhekelia with additional aircraft, radar systems, and specialized personnel since the start of the regional conflicts. Discussions also covered the expansion of cooperation in defense industry, research, and innovation. Furthermore, Palmas participated in the Cyprus Forum London 2026 to address hybrid threats and international coordination. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a long-term strategic partnership, despite occasional differences in policy.
