Cyprus and India elevate relations to strategic partnership
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis conducted an official state visit to India from May 20 to 23, 2026, upon the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders officially upgraded bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership. A key outcome of the summit was the agreement on a five-year defense cooperation roadmap for 2026-2031, covering joint exercises, technical collaboration, and maritime and cybersecurity. Reports indicate that Nicosia is exploring the acquisition of Indian defense equipment, particularly anti-drone and anti-missile systems. The visit also included the signing of five memoranda of understanding and a technical arrangement, reinforcing cooperation in trade, technology, and maritime affairs. India reaffirmed its support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Cyprus, advocating for a resolution based on the UN-agreed framework. Officials noted that Cyprus serves as a strategic gateway for India into the European market, particularly in the context of the India-Middle East-Europe-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
