Cyprus and India upgrade bilateral ties to a strategic partnership
During a state visit to India on May 22, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides and Prime Minister Narendra Modi upgraded bilateral relations between their two countries to a strategic partnership. The two leaders signed a 56-point joint declaration and 11 deliverables, including five memoranda of understanding and one technical arrangement covering diplomacy, defence, security, transport, education, and culture. Discussions focused heavily on counterterrorism, resulting in the establishment of a joint working group to combat extremist threats. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the rule of law and the UN-led process for a bizonal, bicommunal federation to resolve the Cyprus issue. Prime Minister Modi highlighted Cyprus as a key gateway for Indian investment into Europe, noting that the country ranks among India's top ten investors. The visit also addressed connectivity projects like the IMEC corridor and the strengthening of EU-India relations during Cyprus's current EU Council Presidency. Furthermore, the countries agreed to commemorate the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2027 through a series of special events.
