Shooting at Islamic Center of San Diego leaves five dead

On Monday, two teenage suspects, identified as 18-year-old Caleb Vasquez and 17-year-old Cain Clark, opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego. The attack resulted in the deaths of three people, including security guard Amin Abdullah, who is credited with preventing further casualties. Following the shooting, the two suspects were discovered dead in their vehicle from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime, noting that anti-Islamic writings were found in the suspects' vehicle. The incident began after the mother of one suspect contacted police to report her son had taken three of her firearms and fled in her car while expressing suicidal thoughts. Police attempted to locate the youths at a local mall and a school before the shooting at the mosque occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. All students at the mosque's Bright Horizon Academy were reported safe. A fundraising campaign has since collected over $1.7 million to support the family of the deceased security guard.
