Road safety council discusses measures to protect motorcycle riders

The Cyprus Road Safety Council recently met to address the high rate of motorcycle-related fatalities. Official data indicates that out of 15 traffic deaths so far this year, seven involved motorcyclists, including five drivers, one passenger, one moped rider, and one e-scooter operator. Adonis Christofides, head of the Cyprus Motorcyclist Federation, presented proposals to improve both active and passive safety, such as mandatory ABS/traction control, advanced rider training, and better road infrastructure. The proposals also advocate for the retirement of older motorcycles, subsidies for safety equipment, and stricter policing in rural areas. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis confirmed that the ministry has budgeted funds to help riders acquire certified helmets, with final specifications expected to be announced soon. While the government notes that existing measures are often ignored by drivers, the federation emphasizes the need for comprehensive safety reforms to reduce accidents. Last year, in 2025, a total of 12 motorcycle-related deaths were recorded.
