6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Ica region in southern Peru

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal Ica region of southern Peru. The earthquake occurred at 12:57 local time, centered 41 kilometers south of the city of Ica. Approximately 30 people sustained minor injuries, including 27 police officers who suffered mostly bruising. Defense Minister Amadeo Flores visited the area to inspect the damage, confirming that no injuries were serious. Material damages include a collapsed university roof section and damage to an old cemetery that exposed human remains. Landslides and rockfalls caused road closures in the affected areas.
