Calls for investigation into police leadership over Stylianou case

Recent proceedings at the Nicosia District Court regarding the 2019 suicide of 14-year-old Stylianou Konstantinou have brought the police leadership under scrutiny. Independent criminal investigators Andreas Andreou and Poyiatzis reportedly recommended criminal prosecutions against 35 police officers, including the current Police Chief Themistoklis Arnaoutis and the Deputy Chief, for their roles in the case. However, the Attorney General's office intervened, and charges were eventually pursued against only one police officer, citing public interest. Legal experts Simos Angelidis and Christos Triantafyllidis have publicly demanded a transparent justification for the decision not to prosecute the senior leadership. Angelidis specifically noted that the Police Chief was previously interrogated as a suspect regarding six serious offenses but exercised his right to silence. Triantafyllidis has called upon President Nikos Christodoulides to take immediate action, arguing that the current leadership has lost public trust. These developments have reignited a national debate concerning institutional accountability and the role of the Attorney General in selecting which cases proceed to court.
