Severe weather incidents and fatal traffic collision reported in Cyprus
On Saturday, May 23, 2026, heavy rainfall and hail caused flooding in Nicosia, leading to overflowing rivers, submerged basements, and blocked storm drains. The Fire Service responded to multiple calls, including the rescue of an elderly person trapped in a flooded house. Concurrently, police issued warnings for hazardous driving conditions, water accumulation, and low visibility on the Nicosia-Larnaca and Nicosia-Akaki highways under a yellow weather warning. Separately, a fatal road accident occurred on Friday afternoon on the Meneou-Pervolia road. Helga Tarcsai, a 55-year-old Hungarian resident of the Larnaca district, died after her vehicle collided with a car driven by a 26-year-old man. Firefighters were required to extricate her from the vehicle, and she later succumbed to her injuries at Larnaca General Hospital. The 26-year-old driver and a 26-year-old passenger in the victim's car were uninjured, and the Kiti Police Station is investigating the crash.
