Olympiakos Nicosia faces controversy over coaching comments and national team selections

The Cyprus Football Coaches Association has expressed strong dissatisfaction following comments by Petros Petrou, head of the football department at Olympiakos Nicosia. Petrou had publicly stated that as long as he holds his position, no Cypriot coach would be hired by the club. The Association labeled these remarks as discriminatory and offensive to Cypriot professionals. Following communication with the club, the Association was informed that these comments do not represent the official stance of Olympiakos Nicosia. Separately, Olympiakos Nicosia issued a statement questioning the criteria used for selecting players for the Cyprus National Team. The club argued that Leonidas Konomis and Iasonas Pikis were excluded despite their strong performance throughout the season. Olympiakos emphasized that selection should be based on merit rather than the perceived size of a player's club. The club expressed concern that such practices create the impression that the status of a team outweighs individual athletic performance.
