Police mobilization plan for the 2026 legislative elections
Over 2,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure order during the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 24. A central crisis management center will operate in Nicosia starting Sunday morning, supported by regional operation centers across other cities. Police responsibilities include guarding polling stations, conducting motorized patrols, and overseeing the secure transport of ballot boxes. Aerial surveillance will be utilized, involving both police drones and helicopters. The Chief of Police, Themistos Arnautis, will receive real-time updates throughout the process to maintain comprehensive situational awareness. Authorities have advised voters to follow instructions provided by personnel at the polling stations. While specific traffic regulations may be implemented where necessary, the primary focus of the operation is the maintenance of public order and safety. The force's planning process has involved multiple meetings to coordinate resources across all districts. Regular duties for other police members will continue concurrently with the election security operation.
