Urgent building evacuations in Larnaca and broader safety concerns
Following a recent tragedy in Germasogeia, District Self-Government Organizations in Cyprus are conducting emergency inspections of residential buildings. In Larnaca, at least one building containing 24 apartments has been ordered to evacuate immediately due to structural safety concerns. Authorities are currently reviewing 14 additional buildings, including two large residential complexes that house hundreds of people. The potential for these mass evacuations has created significant uncertainty regarding the relocation of the displaced residents. Currently, neither local authorities nor the central government have provided a definitive plan for where these individuals will be housed. Experts and officials are warning that immediate state intervention is required to address the impending homelessness crisis. The review process remains ongoing as officials attempt to mitigate further safety risks while managing the social impact on the affected population.
