Cyprus student wins gold at the European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics

At the European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI 2026) held in Italy from May 12 to May 18, 2026, Cypriot student Mariza Paspalli secured a gold medal. Paspalli ranked third overall among 248 participants from various countries. This marks the second consecutive year that Cyprus has achieved a gold medal in this competition. The Cypriot delegation included students Anastasia Evangelou, Rafaella Nicolaou, and Chrystallena Karittevli. The team was led by informatics teacher Father Antonis Georgiou, with Afroditi Hadjimarkou serving as deputy team leader. According to the Cyprus Computer Society, Paspalli has accumulated 11 international medals in informatics over the last three years. The society stated that this success supports their initiatives to increase female participation in STEM fields. This achievement follows Cyprus' recent hosting of the Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics in 2025.
