Livestock owners in Timi report inconsistent biosecurity enforcement
Livestock owners in the community of Timi, Cyprus, have raised concerns regarding the inconsistent application of biosecurity measures at livestock facilities. Producers claim that while some units strictly enforce protocols for vehicle and personnel access, including disinfection and movement restrictions, other facilities appear to have lax standards. This disparity in enforcement has led to accusations of unfair treatment and fears of significant gaps in disease prevention. The farmers emphasize that biosecurity must be applied horizontally and without exceptions to protect the industry. These concerns are heightened by the current risk of foot-and-mouth disease, which requires strict monitoring across the region. References were also made to similar issues in Pakhna, located in the Limassol district. Owners argue that protecting livestock production cannot be done selectively, especially during times of high disease risk. They are calling for uniform regulatory oversight across all facilities regardless of size or type of activity to mitigate the risk of infection.
