US medical missionary treated for Ebola in Germany

An American medical missionary, Dr. Peter Stafford, is currently in stable condition in Germany after contracting the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak in eastern DRC has resulted in at least 131 deaths and over 513 suspected cases, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a public health emergency. Dr. Stafford was exposed to the virus while treating patients at Nyankunde Hospital in Bunia. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently facilitating the evacuation of six other high-risk US citizens to Germany and the Czech Republic. While the CDC insists the risk to the American public remains low, reports from the Washington Post suggest the White House may have resisted allowing Dr. Stafford's return to the United States. Dr. Stafford’s wife, Rebekah, and their children are currently in quarantine and monitoring. The CDC has also implemented a new order barring foreign travelers who have visited affected countries, including the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan, from entering the US within 21 days.
