Cyprus Game and Fauna Service rescues young Bonelli's eagle

The Cyprus Game and Fauna Service successfully conducted a rescue operation for a young Bonelli's eagle after its mother died from a collision with an electrical power line. The mother bird was being monitored via a satellite transmitter as part of the LIFE Bonelli EastMed project. Following her death, officials monitored the father's ability to feed the chick. When it became clear that the juvenile was not receiving sufficient food and faced an immediate risk of starvation, authorities initiated a mission to retrieve it from its nest in a pine tree within a difficult-to-access forest area. The bird was safely transported to a veterinarian for care and rehabilitation. The project aims to eventually release the bird back into the wild. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers posed by electrical infrastructure to large raptors in the region and emphasizes the importance of satellite tracking for conservation efforts.
