Boko Haram attacks in Borno State result in 33 deaths

On Monday, militants from the group Boko Haram killed 33 people in two separate attacks in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria. According to local paramilitary sources and union officials, 27 fishermen were murdered near the town of Mafa, while six loggers were killed in Dikwa. These incidents are part of a 17-year insurgency that has led to tens of thousands of deaths and widespread displacement. In response to recent militant activity, the Nigerian military has increased cooperation with the United States. Official statements from Abuja and Washington reported that joint airstrikes conducted over the weekend and early in the week resulted in the deaths of 175 militants. Boko Haram, which originated 17 years ago, has since split, leading to the formation of the rival Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA).
