Power outages hit Nicosia and Cyprus following grid fault
On May 21, 2026, a technical fault at Unit 1 of the Vasiliko power station caused widespread power outages across Cyprus starting at 8:16 a.m. While automatic protection systems restored most power quickly, localized disruptions persisted throughout the day. Specifically, residents in Nicosia districts including Chryseleousa in Strovolos, Archangelos and Anthoupolis in Lakatamia, Engomi, and Agioi Trimithias remained without power until the afternoon. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) confirmed that power was expected to be restored in Lakatamia and Agioi Trimithias by 1:30 p.m., and in Engomi and Strovolos by 2:00 p.m. EAC official Giorgos Stamatopoulos reported that load shedding was necessary to maintain grid stability after the sudden production loss. The authority apologized for the inconvenience and experienced high call volumes at its service center due to the incident. Manual intervention was also required to restore power to a line in Protaras.
