Arrests made following discovery of embryos at Tymbou airport

On Wednesday, a 24-year-old man was arrested at Tymbou (Ercan) airport in the north while attempting to depart for a foreign country. Police discovered four human embryos stored in tubes labeled "life parcel" within his luggage. Authorities allege the embryos originated from an IVF center operating without proper authorization in the occupied areas. While the north’s health ministry stated that the company involved had applied for transfer approval on May 15 and received it on May 20, officials claimed the transport attempt occurred before the permit was finalized. Following the initial arrest, two additional suspects were detained for one day on allegations of involvement in the transfer process and permit applications. The 24-year-old suspect was remanded in custody for two days by a local court. The embryos were seized as evidence, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway regarding potential violations of laws governing the transplantation of human cells and tissues.
