Southampton expelled from championship playoff final over spying allegations
The English Football League (EFL) has upheld the expulsion of Southampton from the Championship playoff final following allegations of illegal spying. The club admitted to filming training sessions of Middlesbrough, Oxford United, and Ipswich Town, violating rules against observing opponents within 72 hours of a match. Middlesbrough had demanded the expulsion to maintain the integrity of the game after an alleged Southampton analyst was caught filming from behind a tree. In addition to the final exclusion, Southampton received a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season and an official reprimand. The playoff final against Hull City remains scheduled for Saturday at Wembley Stadium at 3:30 pm. While Southampton CEO Phil Parsons accepted that sanctions were necessary, he publicly criticized the proportionality of the punishment. The final is considered a high-stakes event, offering 200 million pounds in potential revenue across three seasons.
